The Hellenic Police has been an active participant in “Horizon 2020”, the EU framework programme for research and innovation, since September 2019. To fulfill their obligations arising from the relevant funding projects, they have set up scientific panels consisting of highly qualified officers from selected executive services with competences relating to specific research subjects.
“HORIZON 2020” is the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020).
The programme is helping achieve the objectives of the “Europe 2020” Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, by coupling research with innovation and by focusing on three priority areas: scientific excellence, industrial leadership and societal challenges. The goal is to produce world-class science and technology that will boost economic growth.
The research project in which the Hellenic Police participate in the context of the “Horizon 2020” programme is entitled “Secure societies – protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens”. The project promotes research and innovation on security as a societal value, with top priority being given to respect for human rights and the protection of personal data.
