«SAFEGUARD»: Protecting Public Spaces through Intelligent Threat Detection Tools.

The Hellenic Police actively participates in the implementation of the research project SAFEGUARD (SAFEguardinG pUblic spAces through intelligent threat Detection tools), funded by the ISF program. The project commenced on January 1, 2024, with a duration of 30 months. It is coordinated by the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) and involves eight organizations from Greece and Bulgaria.

SAFEGUARD aims to integrate, validate, and demonstrate a next-generation holistic suite of tools that enhance the capabilities of law enforcement authorities in protecting public spaces by detecting, assessing, and preventing terrorist and extremist activities.

The key technologies utilized include:

  • An OSINT platform for collecting and analyzing data from online sources.
  • A Command & Control (C&C) system for near real-time monitoring of public spaces.
  • Advanced threat analysis tools, Augmented Reality (AR), and 3D simulations (VR).
  • Use of IoT sensors and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for dynamic surveillance.

The SAFEGUARD project will deliver high technological readiness level operational outcomes, enhancing the operational capabilities of authorities and promoting the safety of public spaces.
